I just got engaged… now what??

3 Steps to Get the Process Started

Maggie & Luis - Engagement Session

Maggie & Luis – Engagement Session

This was the first thing I thought about after Tom popped the question. We were so excited and enjoyed all of the “engagement bliss” feelings, but shortly after, I immediately got overwhelmed by all of the things I had to do now and didn’t know where to start.

I had never had any training on wedding planning and it seamed like everyone else automatically knew where to go and what to do. That’s why I wanted to talk about some fundamental steps in the wedding planning process to help you get started on your wedding planning journey!

  1. Talk to your fiancé about what they want and what their expectations are.

This is the ultimate first step to wedding planning. Get on the same page with your partner! What season does he/she want to get married? How involved do they want to be? What type of wedding do you you want (big, small, elopement, destination)?

These are just a few basic questions to begin establishing what type of wedding you’ll be looking towards and how much of the planning will be shared.

After you’ve sorted out some of the expectations, continue the conversation by establishing your priorities for your wedding. Your priorities will direct your planning process from the beginning to the end. Need some insight? Click here to check out our blog post on determining your wedding priorities.

  2. Budget

Okay this one is pretty self-explanatory… How much do you want to spend on your wedding? Talk to your fiancé, parents, grandma, or even the mirror and have the conversation of how much you want to spend on this event. We put a lot of our money into our first 3 priorities. Getting quality vendors comes with a price tag – the price ((typically)) represents the quality of the vendor. If you don’t have a limit on cash for your wedding – then all the power to ya!

  3. First Priority

Now that you’ve talked about expectations and budget – it’s time to take your first trip to a magical place that we like to call vendor land. Maybe you’ve been there before or maybe this is your first time; either way you are welcome here and the fun is just about to begin! Now you get to look at options, decide on what you like, and put the pieces together for a beautiful day.

I highly recommend beginning your planning process with your first priority. For us we knew we were getting married in December and the atmosphere of our wedding was one of our biggest priorities so we started looking for a location. (Somewhere temperature regulated, yet still big enough to hold 150 people)

There are many ways you can go about finding venues and vendors like instagram, google, weddingwire.com, or even theknot.com. Many vendors can give you recommendations as well of people they enjoy working with. Always make sure you find a vendor that represents your style or can accommodate for your wedding-day vision.
